This project began in 2007. I am using a casting kit and some other parts supplied by RMI Railworks as the basis for my engine. I am fabricating and machining, from scratch, most of the other parts that will enhance the RMI model and make it more prototypical (like the real, full size engine the kit was based on) namely, a 2-6-2 Prairie-type steam locomotive, #23. This engine was a Maine “two-footer” (two foot gauge) and was built in 1913 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works out of Philadelphia, PA. It was operated by the Sandy River and Rangeley Lakes RR as a short line, tourist/logging railroad near Phillips, Maine. The entire road, all the engines and most of the rolling stock were sold for scrap in 1935 during the depression.
My engine will weigh in about a ton, be coal fired with a 12 inch diameter boiler (operating pressure of 125 psi) have working air brakes, a working steam-driven turbo generator and air compressor, a steam whistle and other working appliances. I’m at least two more years away from completing this project.
